Jane Powell F.R.S.A B.Ed (Hons), A.T.D.
I have exhibited fairly extensively over the years, whilst teaching art and art history at secondary schools both in Coventry and Warwickshire. I have held exhibitions firstly, at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry in the sixties and this provided a successful beginning for other exhibitions at Leamington Spa Art Gallery, The Herbert Art Gallery, the Ikon Gallery in Birmingham and many other venues. I had periods of producing canal paintings and drawings, interiors, local scenes and designing and producing a pub sign for the Rose and Crown at Ratley, Warwickshire.
On leaving teaching, I set up the Jane Powell Art Studio, firstly in Balsall Common and then in Kenilworth at the Bank Gallery in the High Sheet. Working in conjunction with my cousin Marie, we expanded the business which gave us three small galleries in which artists could exhibit their work and, from time to time, I had the opportunity to have shared exhibitions and my own one woman shows. The Studio exhibitions were many and varied with us regularly displaying group shows of two and three dimensional work, one man/woman displays and Open exhibitions. During these twelve years I also taught both adults and children on a weekly basis at the studio.
Since retiring from the Kenilworth premises in 2008, I have been able to concentrate still further on my own painting, hence the examples of my work on display.
I joined the Coventry and Warwickshire Society of Artists in 1968, and became Chairman of the Society in 2002. On relinquishing this position, I became President in 2009 and am very proud to have been elected to this position to take the Society through this Centenary year.
