Jacqui Smithson

Mixed Media Artist

Jacqui works mainly with textiles although she does still pick up a paint brush now and then…….

Her textile art is created with the wet felting technique. By layering pre dyed Merino wool she builds up a design and by shaping and twisting the fibres the more defined shapes and images are created. The process is much like building up a loosely painted acrylic as the colours blend so beautifully together.  When the design is finished, the wool is soaked with hot water and soap and then rolled (for quite some time) until the fibres have matted together to make felt. When dry, the piece is then embellished with hand and machine stitch to give finer definition.

Jacqui has limited edition prints and greetings cards produced with images of her work.

Learn how to make felt by signing up for one of Jacqui’s workshops which she runs regularly in Kenilworth or at a venue of your choice if you have a large group. Great for team building,  ladies evenings or children’s birthday parties.

Jacqui, What led you to take up your artistic activity? I always enjoyed art as a child and as many children do, loved collecting shells at the beach and making them into shapes and patterns and of course rummaging through my Granny’s button box. My Dad worked in the textile mills in Yorkshire and I was always fascinated by the sight of the great bails of wool and waste cloth being hauled up on hooks up to a small hatch way above. (Before the days of health and safety!!) I think my love for textiles was born all those years ago from those visits.
